Our roller was skipping really bad when switching directions .The drive gears as you can see above a worn down ,
They should look more like these gears that keeps tension on the chain .
The drum side didn't fair to well either . This drum gear is very expensive , We figured out that the operators are not letting the machine coast to a stop but using the redirection pedals as a brake snapping them back and forth . Not only is it hard on the gears but can compact the collars and leave spin marks on them . We are on a second set of gears now and many chains . I'm thinking there are under 300 hrs. on this machine .
This gear set I found to be an amazing piece of technology . I'll try to explain it . The gear slides onto the shaft first see the center cog how it is beveled and has 2 shallow drill marks and one long one , the cog is also slotted so it will pinch onto the keyed shaft . You slide this cog on next . The amazing part is the the gear has threaded half hole as you see above and as you thread the Allen head bolt it draws the gear on pinching the cog to the shaft The last hole is threaded all the way through on both sides and locks everything together with a bolt . Took me a while to figure out how to get it of the first time . ( take the set bolt out and Allen head bolts and tap the gear towards the drum )

Double roller chain . This is the exact same count link side by side . The left is new and the right stretched . I'm amazed at how much this double rolled chain stretched a good inch . Also found this chain through Lawson's and should be able to replace it 3 times for a half the price of the dealer chain .

This machine kicks up lots of sand at times and prefer to grease the chain with dry graphite so that the sand doesn't stick to it in an attempt to slow down wear up wear .
This is the chain I ordered . Will be interesting to see if it lasts longer than the OEM ones .

Great post Bob. We just replaced the drive components on one of our tru-turfs and the other needs it as well. I believe this is the second swap for the older machine and first for the newer unit.

I got the chain by the 10' roll from our Lawsons company . I'll get the part # for you tomorrow .

ReplyDeleteI have the same model roller. I'm having an issue with the spiker lever not functioning properly. There is no tension to raise or lower the spiker, however all springs are attached, I replaced the woodruff key in the spiker arm and all seems to be in the correct place. Is there anything else I should check? Thank you for your insights.

Puzzling only shows the woodruff key that connects the handle to the lift /lower part of it . Is the key way worn out to ?
On page 19 of manual . Is the bearing that pushes down on the lift lower spiker framing on the right side . If I'm not mistaken it goes between the frame and underside of deck . When you pull on handle it should push the frame down against spring tension . Not a hundred percent sure . We don't use the spiker option here . But may be worth looking at .
Actually I think there is a bearing on the end of lift lower shaft that goes inside a framed in area and rolls back and worth so it can lift and lower . Maybe the boxed in area is missing on the lift lower frame rail .

ReplyDeleteSorry to ok bump this old post, but we have the same roller and are experiencing an issue. The machine travels very slow. Feels like the parking brake is on (it's not), and struggles up moderate hills. Slightly worse going left, but nauseatingly slow both. Ever see this? Starting points to check??

I would disconnect the linkage at the pump and take the chain off . Move the leaver back and forth and see top gear moves fast either way . If it does check bearings on big drive roller . If the hydraulic fluid and filter has never been changed ... I would do that next . If it still doesn't go the pump may be bad .

ReplyDeleteIf you set machine down as if your rolling and it goes on easier . If there is lots of slack the drum roller needs bearings soon
