Toro 5800 planetary gear service

These Planetary gear fluids should be changed yearly at the very least . There are quit a few comments on how tediously  this job is . The 85 w 140 flows like molasses in a cold shop . Original idea I heard from dealer tech ( Bill @ Veseys ) and decided to make something using his idea and ideas from Golftechs .

The plug holes ( 4 of them 2 inside and two on the out side facing you ) are 7/16 - 20 thread . Pick up theses at Lawsons

The 1/4 brass nut will work ok . One end has seat .Making up a double flare line . Double flared not so much for pressure but needed a bump out so nut will seal it up easily against fitting .
For guys that haven't made proper brake lines this is how its done . Cut pipe length you need . Bore out hole a bit otherwise you will have a bugger of a time getting the double flare tool out .

Put it in holder (1/4"in this case ) and flip double flare tool upside down as a guide for length sticking out of clamp .

Flip flare tool over and put in tubing .

Press it in till it bottoms out .

Pull tool out and you should see a near perfect start to your double flare .

With out tool press in again a bit to flatten it out .

And done . If your making brake line I would advise to put your fittings on first . Lol you'll know why .

Lightly clamp in vise

And snug up .

Here is my gizmo with pipe I just made attached . Yes its a spaghetti Jar . I'm going to keep an Eye out for a jar with a sturdier lid . I drill 2 holes in top a couple of sizes smaller than hose I'm using . One side with tubing will go to near bottom of jar the other just has to poke through a bit .

A test run ....works perfectly .

5 psi was enough to move that thick gear oil easily . Wouldn't hurt to warm the gear oil up a bit before starting .

Draining the outside .Drain plug should be straight down leaving the other plug at the 3 or 9 o'clock position .

Then the inside . If your in a warm shop it shouldn't take to long .

There are access holes to get at the 3 o'clock plugs out on the inside

Filled my jar up with 85 w 140 then keeping the pressure on at 5 lbs waited for it to come out the 3 o'clock hole . The instructions are vague in the operators manual you have to do this to both sides . If you do just one it won't have the right amount of gear oil because it takes a long time for oil to transfer itself to the inside. You can leave the plugs out on the inside it will be barely trickling out when your done this side .

On to the inside ones . See barely any coming out .

Hooking up to bottom plug on inside

Then after it seeps out put plug in and let rest of pressure out on pressure gun . You will loose a little when detaching this time so be ready with plug .

Just another picture

Toro had to get me this spacer on one side of machine . Park brake wire was rubbing on tire till it popped .

All done . check for leaks and just snug all plugs in . Warm shop and warm oil after tools are out maybe 10 minutes a side easily .

I had also tried to vacuum oil in from 3 o'clock positon sucking it up from bottom but found it took to long .

JD 4320 rear hydraulic hook up mounts

When I came here this tractor had the lines running from the loader attachment for a rear line hook up. They were flopping around and hard to connect at times. Had a little time to make something work for what we had already.

Used some 1/4 " flat stock and drilled out a 1" hole then filed it out the shape of the coupler.

Had to make the holes a little farther apart. Hard to get your hands in there for hook up otherwise.

 Here is one installed
The hook up from front block.
Making up some washers to take up rest of space in behind bar. Also filed out a regular washer to just fit over line threads.

Not too bad. Mark the points of nut then use a triangle file to start.

Then file the flat areas in between

Mounted it to the roll bar
with a clamp from hardware store.

Just a demonstration of fixing something with what you have. If there were no connection points on this tractor it may be cheaper to buy a kit for the rear couplers from JD.

Toro HDXD workman Thermostate

Was a little shocked at the price but then again I haven't bought a thermostat in a few years .Did a little search on line and seemed to be in the ball park if your counting in taxes deliver exchange etc .

The OEM ordered from dealer looks a little different . I had ordered a gasket but it come with a gasket also . Both of which are to small but if you notched out one of the holes it may work .

Reinstalled it with old gasket since it was a metal type and didn't seemed damaged . I'd rather would have liked a new one but this machines been in the shop for a while waiting on parts .

Checking out the old part . Looks a little off center .

Lots of shiny marks on side from it scraping open to circulate anti-freeze .It must have stuck causing closed ( I say closed because lower hose was still cool when it was over heating )  Ran it up to temperature till fan came on and let it cool to check for leaks .... all good . It may have failed because sensor wire for fan was corroded and kept fan off . The guys wouldn't know the difference so it may have warped the thermostat enough to keep it from moving freely.  I figured the hotter it got the tighter the interference causing it not to open anymore .

Toro 5800 tank cradle inspection and clean up

Checking the cradle on our 5800 sprayer . I've read that some guys had checked theirs to see it in pretty hard shape . Even properly cleaned there are areas were chemicals are trapped . This sprayer has been on site for 4 years and had some time to pull the tank for a look . Not much holding on there put well supported and very easy to remove . We have all the bells and whistles on ours so there was a few extra hoses . The machine is pretty busy all season . Only unit we have so i'm taking extra time and checking it over good .

Might need a hand getting the tank off . I managed ok but is a little awkward.

And its off . a fair amount of heavy scaling rust .

Impressed with the thickness of the steel used for cradle . Money well spent .

Looks bad but ground it off with a medium stone grinding wheel .

Wear eye protection and mask lots of air born debris . Finished it of afterwards with a medium flap wheel . Turned out pretty good .

Used the High solids primer and paint from Lawsons . Great stuff .

Had some spent tubes laying around so decided to recycle them and contact cemented them over cradle .The original padding had all fallen off at one time or another . One was left .

Light padding for the tank .

Doing the other side . Glue both contact surfaces and wait for it to dry clear then press them in place .

Went to tighten this up and it broke apart in my hands . Maybe not chemical resistant plastic . New one on the way .

Tank and rinse tank reinstalled and leveled .

Going with sill gasket and doubling it up for under the straps . A little extra padding and will keep the rust off the tank .

One strap cleaned up and painted. 3 to go.

For the cost you might as well replace all the hardware bolts .

 A few more pics

Waiting for paint to dry .Almost done and I give this machine a full fluid and filter service every season .

Even replacing hose clamps .

Straps back on just another attachment to clean up and put on this side . Should be good for another 4 years .

Good time to also replace the suction side of pump O rings

And clean and inspect the flow meter .
