Up in the air with right rear suspension hanging .
Place tripod under rear end . Remove U bolt over axle ,shock , drive belt , secondary clutch , drain gear oil , axle bolts , axle removes easily , remove all the bolts for cover , bolts are all the same size .
Remove the 2 - 10 mm . bolts
Disconnect forward / reverse cable .
Separate cover . There is a spot for a pry bar to fit in to help start it . Here is what it looks like .
The shifting fork can only be installed in one direction . Keep track of which way it came out .
I wiggle the 3 sets of gears out and remove them altogether . I find it easier to do it this way . Set them on the bench the way they came out .
This is what it looks like when they are out . You will have to line the shifting fork up into the lever when reassembling .
The bad bearing is the one on the left . I replace both of them on this shaft only . The gear oil I find doesn't get up to this area well causing it to wear out .
I don't have a press but this works well for me .
For the other bearing I use threaded rod to make it work .
I drive the new bearings on with my homemade tool . Also replace the seal for the secondary /driven clutch shaft .
When installing the 3 sets of gears take your time and get the bearings seated in the case and line up your shifting fork and lever . Set them in the case by tapping the ends of the shafts with a dead blow hammer . The shaft for the shifting fork might take a bit to get it in , make sure you tap everything in secure . I use RTV sealer and put a little grease on seal lip then reassemble everything in reverse order . Lightly tab around the case to get it back on . Use the bolt pattern sequence in book for case cover . Takes me about 1.5 to 2 hrs.http://golfcoursemechanics.blogspot.ca/2011/11/sealed-bearing-tip.html
Some of the techs are using this tip for this situation .The gear oil doesn't get up there well .

ReplyDeleteI replace both bearings on shaft and seal for driven clutch. 1019278-01, 0007336 ( noisy bearing) and seal 1012714. Numbers on bearings are 6205 and 6305C3. If they come with seals do the sealed bearing grease trick.

ReplyDeleteBob, can I use this to install high speed gears on a 2002 Kawasaki DS Gas cart? I read else where that I would need to take the entire diff off so the gears don't fall out when I open the diff cover. Is really possible to just jack the cart up on the right side so the cart sits at an angle and open the diff cover without the gears falling out?

DeleteSlides off . There is a keyway . Goes on torque to 18 ft lbs . I'd put a little blue loctite . They recommend a replacement bolt kit

Delete68 to 78 inch lbs case halfs . Axle to rear end 20 to 24 ft lbs . I use rtv sealer and let it sit over night before putting gear oil in

ReplyDeleteIf you take the axle tube out and slide axle back in off machine there should be a circlip holding the axle in place . Must have broke or end of axle wore the groove out.

DeleteHi Bob, I bought a rear end for a project and it's just like the one on the photos.I would like to know the year model because the driver side shaft needs replacing and I checked the bearings and the gear that runs off the clutch also needs new bearings. They don't have parts numbers anywhere. Thx for your help. Eugene

DeleteSo bearing is on axle shaft ? Haven’t had to remove one before now I only have to gators here . Maybe heat bearing and try wedging it off, usually and bearing puller goes around bearing and is pressed off .you might be able to heat it up good with benzene torch and drop shaft end down on a good piece of hardwood, you don’t what to damage splines on end . I have access to torch so would just cut it of or enough to spit inner race

DeleteHi. We have a 1999 club car carry all 6. When you switch it to reverse it makes an awful grinding noise. We have replaced the bearings and thrust washers and plates. What is the problem and how can we fix it.
ReplyDeleteHard to say . I would check the lever goes far enough to engage it into reverse . Cable adjustment. Are the clutches working properly. Belt should not be spinning during gear changing. Maybe primary clutch is seized up gripping the belt . Check those ideas first.
